SACRAMENTO NEIGHBORHOOD RECEIVES FREE WEATHERIZATION SERVICES AND APPLIANCES TO HELP LOWER UTILITY BILLS

The Avenues Neighborhood Weatherization Project is Sponsored by Community Resource Project, Inc., SMUD and PG&E

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Today, a Sacramento neighborhood along with representatives from Community Resource Project, Inc. (CRP), Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD), Naildown Construction and Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) celebrate an innovative pilot program called the Avenues Neighborhood Weatherization Project, designed to help income-qualified families improve energy efficiency in their homes.

This unique pilot program combines federal Recovery Act weatherization funds awarded to CRP with funding from PG&E and SMUD.  The project will help families lower their monthly utility bills by providing free weatherization services and energy efficient appliances.  Many of these services will be installed by Naildown Construction. By joining efforts, CRP, PG&E and SMUD help to ensure that eligible families in the neighborhood obtain the maximum benefits from existing energy efficiency programs.

“The close collaboration between Community Resource Project, PG&E and SMUD is the key element in providing the highest quality and level of services that will make a difference for families struggling to make ends meet,” said Louise A. Perez, executive director of CRP.

Households that qualify for the program are eligible for a number of free energy-saving measures and appliances that will help reduce utility bills, such as:

About Community Resource Project Inc. (CRP):  The mission of CRP is to improve opportunities for people in need through housing, health, and education. CRP is a progressive organization founded in 1972 by three Latino community leaders in an effort to provide much-needed services to the low-income community.

The CRP Housing Division leverages resources from more than half a dozen contracts to provide home repairs known as weatherization throughout Sacramento, Sutter, and Yuba Counties.  With funding from the Low-income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), the Department of Energy Weatherization Assistance Program, SMUD, and others, CRP’s certified personnel  install insulation, dual-paned windows and sliding glass doors, weather-stripping, energy star appliances, CFL light bulbs, low-flow showerheads and heating and cooling systems for hundreds of low-income families every year.

About SMUD:  As the nation’s sixth largest publicly owned utility, SMUD has been providing low-cost, reliable electricity for more than 60 years to Sacramento County (and a small portion of Placer County). SMUD is a recognized industry leader and award winner for its innovative energy efficiency programs, renewable power technologies, and for its sustainable solutions for a healthier environment. The utility is on track to become the first large California utility to receive 20 percent of its energy from renewable resources. For more information, visit www.smud.org.
